I recently had the pleasure of hosting @SydneyJamesson author of Touchstone for Play

Syd was kind enough to let me access part of a recent interview;

How did the idea for your book come to you?

I have always written since being small; it started with little songs and I moved on to stories and then, after leaving school, I switched between jobs but always surrounded myself with bits of paper covered in scribbles: incomplete dialogue, opening lines and chapter headings.

I wrote a book years ago, with a male character very similar to Ayden Stone: handsome, rich, self-assured but, with family commitments and a demanding daughter going through the terrible twos, I left it on the back burner to collect dust.

The trigger came in the form of Twilight. I enjoyed the books so much and, like everyone else, fell for Edward. I was drawn to the promise of protection and power but also captivated by his vulnerability; his love for Bella made him weak at times and, ironically, less able to protect her. Then came Mr. Grey and the possibility of endowing upon Ayden super powers of a more carnal nature. With the fervour of Doctor Frankenstein, I reanimated Ayden and TouchStone for play was born.

What authors/ books have influenced you?

I have quite an eclectic taste. The first book I remember reading and enjoying was Jaws. It gave me a life-long fear of going in sea water deeper than my navel, so it must have been well written. I have crossed genres as many times as The Queen Mary has the Atlantic; every time discovering something new and engaging to poach and reproduce in a modified form as my own. Like many authors, I consider myself to be a magpie in that sense; I see something special that catches my eye … I have to have it, bring it home and take ownership of it before introducing it to its new surroundings. For example, I had written TouchStone for play four months ago… then I came across Sylvain Reynard. The sensual mood he creates in his books inspired me; it was the stimulus I needed to give Ayden a soul, to allow him to say what he felt without shame or embarrassment. I’m very grateful to SR for that.

This is a great, fantasy book. The main character, a young girl called Imelda, is instantly likeable. She has a wonderful relationship with her father and both are good role models for young and old alike.

The connection between father and daughter is heart warming as are the connections between the friends they make along the way. There is definitely scope for another book as I would love to read more of Imelda’s adventures with the new friends she makes in this story. The start of a new series and a new heroine maybe? Enjoyable fantasy adventure with great characters.
